Women’s Eyewear Trends 2021
A pair of glasses can completely shape a woman’s look. Whether you’re sticking with the same pair or looking for a new set of eyeglasses, the eyewear you choose has the power to alter your entire look altogether! Women’s eyewear trends are particularly interesting to look at as they often say something about women’s fashion as a whole: statement glasses complement a maximalist style, while classic, more low key frames are more fitting for a relaxed and casual trend (much like what we saw during the pandemic!).
There are an endless variety of options to choose from when it comes to women’s eyewear. Color, texture, shape, and size are just a few of the things to consider when choosing everyday eyeglasses or sunglasses. But what were the most popular on the runway this year? Let’s take a look into some of the women’s eyewear trends in 2021:
Neutrals. Most eyeglasses this year took on neutral tones, like browns, tans, blacks, and sometimes whites. When eyeglasses did have a pop of color, it was typically as an accent, or in a muted tone, like muted pinks, blues, or even burgundy. Bold colors weren’t a huge trend this year, but it didn’t mean eyeglasses weren’t a fun statement piece!
Tortoise. Going along with neutrals, tortoiseshell patterns stayed popular this year. Although this is not as simple as a solid color, tortoiseshell is still a classic texture and color pattern that went along with the earthy and natural trend. If you’re looking for something more muted, try lighter-toned tortoiseshell patterns for an old-school elegance. On the other hand, a bold tortoiseshell with more contrast is a great way to add a little boost to your outfit, without making too much of a statement.
Acetate. Acetate material glasses saw a huge increase in popularity this year for their versatility in shape, size, and color. They fit a wide variety of styles, from the ’60s and 70’s styles to the modern 21st century, making them appealing to almost everyone. Clear acetate glasses were particularly trendy this year.
Gold. Gold frames remained popular in 2021, especially for those looking for something lightweight to wear. This might have been because of the pandemic and work-from-home mandates, which allowed people to focus more on finding comfortable yet functional options. Most gold frames were thin and came in classic shapes, making them extremely easy to incorporate into any wardrobe’s style.
Chic Shapes. The different shapes of eyeglasses were really where we saw different trends emerge. Though classic shapes of course remained popular, we saw a huge uptick in maximalist styles: from large sunglasses to small, micro glasses. Think oversized square or circular frames, large cat eyes, mod, and futuristic goggle-like glasses, followed by narrow, rectangle glasses. This may have been because of the rise in popularity and resurgence of trends from the 1990s.
Reinvented Classics. This year, we saw some modernized classic frames and accessories become extremely trendy. New age aviators with oversized frames came into trend, along with modern versions of butterfly glasses and club masters also coming into the mix. We also saw a resurgence in the use of glasses chains and charms to adorn glasses. Many people just used simple cloth or gold/chrome colored chains, however, pearled and beaded chains were also popular.
